Smoky Hollow Parkhas received a $8.6 million grant to fund a project that includes restoration of the Pigeon House Branch and the first phase of the Pigeon House Greenway Trail.
The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Grant will also cover other passive recreation amenities, stream restoration and flood and stormwater management.

“This grant will allow the City to fully transform an underutilized space in our downtown into a green oasis where Raleigh residents and visitors can enjoy an improved Pigeon House Creek, greenway, and public plazas,” Raleigh Parks Director Stephen Bentley said.
The centerpiece of the park is the restoration of Pigeon House Branch, a restored stream that can be seen from multiple viewing areas along the pathways and plaza. It will be realigned to flow through the middle of the park.
The area dubbed Smoky Hollow Park is a 14-acre space at the corner of Capital Boulevard and Peace Street, north of downtown Raleigh. It is owned by the city of Raleigh and is currently used as a city maintenance facility.
It was known for years as Devereux Meadow, until November 2022, when the Raleigh City Council approved renaming it to Smoky Hollow Park. Designs were approved in May 2024. The next design phase will start this fall with construction set for 2026.
