Carter, who is charged with first-degree murder, is wanted in connection with the death of Damian C. Chavis, 18, of Scotland County.

According to the sheriff's office, Chavis was found dead on Thursday. He was found lying in the roadway along the 3500 block of East 7th Street Road in Lumberton.

According to Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins, although the suspect is under 18, law enforcement are permitted by law to show Carter's photo to assist with his search and due to the nature of the crime.

Law enforcement will have to remove Carter's photo from the web and all social media and once he is captured, but the photo may remain on other websites, Wilkins said.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division is investigating the case. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Carter or the case is asked to call the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3170 or 910-671-3100.

According to a GoFundMe page started for the family, Chavis had recently graduated from Scotland High School and had plans to begin working with the color guard in the Richmond Senior High School marching band.
