Durham detention officer arrested, accused of sex with inmate

A detention officer was arrested Monday and accused of having sex with a person in her custody.

According to the Durham County Sheriff's Office, Jade Shanicia Lanique Robertson was arrested for violating a North Carolina law that prohibits sexual activity by a person having custody of a victim in a governmental institution.

Robertson worked as a detention officer in the Durham County Detention Facility but was immediately terminated by Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead, according to the sheriff's office.

Robertson had been employed by the sheriff's office since October 2019; most recently serving as a sergeant on a security squad in September 2022.

"This behavior is not indicative of the values of the men and women of this agency, nor does it align with the training, policies, and procedures of the Durham County Sheriff's Office," Birkhead said.

Robertson was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
