Several companies in and near the Triangle are planning closures that are expected to eliminate almost 180 jobs, according to notices filed with the state Department of Commerce. They include jobs in Johnston, Alamance and Lee counties.
Employers are required to inform officials of plant closures or mass layoffs under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act to help workers and officials prepare for transitions. According to WARN notices received by state commerce officials in the past two weeks:

Parkdale Mills, a yarn manufacturer, is closing a facility in the Lee County city of Sanford and cutting 74 jobs. “The decision to close the facility is due to the significant economic challenges we are facing, particularly the rapid increase in energy costs, which has rendered our business model unsustainable,” Karen Menting, the company’s vice president of human resources, said in the notice to state officials. The employees have been notified of the cuts, which take effect on Nov. 17, the company said.
West Logistics LLC plans to lay off 58 warehouse employees and close a facility at 2080 Woodall Road in the Johnston County town of Benson. The third-party logistics company provides warehousing and logistics services to John Deere Turf Care at the facility, according to the notice sent to state officials. West Logistics’ contract with John Deere Turf Care runs through Nov. 30, which is when the cuts go into effect, the company said. Employees have been notified, the notice said.
Conn Appliances Inc., a Texas retailer seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, is closing an Alamance County facility at 1017 Corporate Park Drive in Mebane. Fifty-eight jobs are expected to be eliminated as a result of the closure, according according to the Department of Commerce. The company says the first wave of layoffs will become effective Oct. 31, with later cuts as the company goes through the bankruptcy process and winds down the facility. Affected employees have been notified, the company said in its notice to the state.
