Sending a student to college is getting more expensive this year, but families can still save hundreds of dollars by taking advantage of student discounts before they shop.
The National Retail Federation estimates families will spend an average of $1,437 preparing a student for college this year, $111 more than last year.

Much of that increase is being driven by technology purchases, not traditional school supplies.
According to the NRF, families expect to spend nearly $342 on electronics, making them the single largest college expense. Dorm furnishings follow at $194, followed by clothing $182, food $154 and personal care items $133.
"If we look at computers, we know that chip prices are incredibly high, and that's pushing some of the cost of computers, and this is a big-ticket item," said Mark Mathews of the National Retail Federation.
Consumer expert Trey Bodge said shoppers who plan ahead and use available discounts can significantly reduce those costs.
"Be strategic about how you shop, and it can make a really meaningful difference over time," Bodge said.
Student discounts that can lower college costs
Before buying college essentials, check whether you qualify for student pricing.
Apple education pricing
Eligible college students, parents buying for a student and educators can purchase a 13-inch MacBook Air for $1,199 instead of $1,299. Apple is also offering a $100 gift card with qualifying purchases for a limited time.
Walmart+
Students who qualify can receive 50% off an annual Walmart+ membership, reducing the cost from $98 to $49.
Amazon Prime Student
Eligible students can receive a six-month free trial of Amazon Prime, which includes free shipping and other member benefits.
Mini fridges
Dorm refrigerators are already on sale at many retailers, including Walmart, Target and Home Depot. For even bigger savings, experts recommend checking Facebook Marketplace, where used mini fridges are often listed for half the retail price or less.
Printers
HP is offering $40 off select printers for students, including the HP DeskJet 4355 wireless color printer.
