The North Carolina Zoo launched a poll to pick the names for its 2-month-old sand cat kittens.

The kittens, one male and one female, were born Feb. 26 to parents Sahara and Cosmo.

There are several names to choose from for each kitten. The NC Zoo said the name options are inspired by languages and places from the regions where sand cats naturally live in the wild. Sand cats are native to the deserts of Northern Africa and the Middle East.

Male kitten name options:

  • Kavir: Persian origin for desert or salt desert
    • Zayn: Arabic for handsome
      • Rocco: Short for Morocco
        • Qamar: Arabic for moon
          • Khosh: Farsi for handsome

            Female kitten names options:

            • Zahra: Arabic for Flower
              • Yasmin: Persian word for Jasmine Flower
                • Ziri: Arabic for Moonlight
                  • Aziza: Arabic for Beloved or Cherished
                    • Noor: Arabic for Light
                      • Ziba: Farsi for Beautiful
