Through a public records request, WRAL Investigates got the data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation on which intersections in Durham County have the most crashes.

Here is the data provided by the NCDOT, for state-maintained roads with the most crashes between Jan. 1 and July 31. The agency counts crashes that are within 150 feet of the intersection:

1. Interstate 40 and North Carolina Highway 55, with 28 crashes

2. I-85 and Avondale Drive, with 25 crashes

3. I-85 and Roxboro Street, with 23 crashes

4. NC 54 and NC 55, with 23 crashes 

5. I-85 and Guess Road, with 21 crashes

6. I-40 and Page Road, with 19 crashes 

7. I-40 and Fayetteville Road, with 19 crashes 

8. I-885 and Holloway Street, with 17 crashes

9. NC 54 and Fayetteville Road, with 17 crashes

10a. I-85 and Hillandale Road, with 16 crashes

10b. NC 147 and Alston Avenue, also with 16 crashes

10c. I-40 and NC 45, also with 16 crashes

An analysis of NCDOT crash data from Jan. 1 to July 31 reveals that the intersection of I-40 and NC Highway 55 is the most dangerous in Durham County, with 28 crashes.

While the intersections geographically span the county, numbers two and three are right next to each other. WRAL Investigates has been reporting on concerns about the intersection of I-85 and Roxboro Street for years.

In 2021, WRAL reported that the NCDOT did not have any planned improvements at that location. WRAL Investigates asked about planned improvements for all the intersections topping this year's list, and the NCDOT did not mention anything for that location.  

On Monday, WRAL Investigates reported on the intersections in Wake County with the most crashes.

N.C. 55/ N.C.54: Pedestrian safety project.

I-40 at N.C. 55: Meridian Parkway to I-40 interchange in Durham. Construct third southbound lane, upgrade ramp terminals, and include bike-ped facilities.

N.C. 147 at Alston Avenue: NC 147 (Durham Freeway) to US 70 Business / NC 98 (Holloway Street) in Durham. Widen to four-lane divided facility from NC 147 to Main Street and replace Norfolk Southern Railroad bridges. Modernize from Main Street to US 70 Business / NC 98 (Holloway Street)
