Apex undergoing independent review of utility bills after cybersecurity attack

The Town of Apex is working with a review firm to asses utility bills after a cybersecurity attack in July 2024.

The firm, BerryDunn, spent time meeting with staff to understand current billing processes and become familiar with the software. 

Last summer, a hack knocked the town network offline. Residents were unable to pay bills or apply for permits electronically while the town's network was down. Some customers were strapped with bills that were higher than usual. One person told WRAL News their bill was $1,000.

Billing simulations, run by the firm, will occur soon.

"The intent is to take those simulated bills and compare those to the actual bills received by residents," said Apex Town Manager Randy Vosburg.

The simulated bills will be compared to those issued by the town to see the difference in amount charged.

Town officials plan to reach out to customers to inform them about the results. The town will release more information about those plans at a later date.
