Benson's Mule Days returns for 77th year

Benson's largest celebration of agriculture and community returns this weekend for the 77th annual Mule Days festival.

The North Carolina tradition started in 1949 as a celebration of local farmers and the mules that kept the farms running smoothly. More than 77 years later, the tradition continues with several attractions including a rodeo, mule events, stable rides, wagon tours, a carnival, live music, and more.

This year's event began Thursday evening and will continue throughout Sunday afternoon, with tens of thousands of visitors expected to attend.  

The biggest attraction of Benson Mule Days continues to be the parade. This year, the parade will honor America's 250th birthday with a special, patriotic theme. 

For the 77th year, Mission Mules -- a non-profit disaster relief organization of trained pack mules --  will lead the parade. The mules carry critical supplies into areas made inaccessible by storms, flooding, washed-out roads, downed trees, and other disasters. 

The organization was formed following Hurricane Helene, when pack mules were used to bring supplies into Western North Carolina.
