Cary, NC — Newly released police records link the recently ousted Cary town manager to a 2016 investigation into a suspected drug house.
The records show police documented seeing a vehicle belonging to Sean Stegall outside a hotel where officers believed drug sales were happening. The report says police connected the car to Stegall after running the license plate.

Officers then followed the car to the Stegall home in Cary. The report does not definitively say Stegall was the driver, and he never faced charges.
"After finding records that involved the former Town Manager, I recommended to the Interim Town Manager, Town Attorney, and Cary Town Council that these records be shared with the general public," Cary Police Chief Terry Sult said. "No charges were ever brought against Mr. Stegall in this matter, and there’s nothing in my inquiry that warrants further action."
WRAL News has reached out to Stegall for comment. We have not yet heard back.
Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht released a statement on Thursday following the newly release records.
"These documents are concerning and raise many questions, questions for which we don’t have answers, and we won’t speculate on what happened nearly 10 years ago in the absence of facts and further evidence," the statement read in part.
WRAL News has also reached out to members of the Cary Town Council, asking if the council was aware of this report during Stegall's term as town manager, and about the background checks required for the position.
Stegall resigned as town manager back in December after questions arose about his spending of town money. Documents previously obtained by WRAL News indicate that Stegall spent thousands of dollars at a four-star hotel during a conference in Austin, Texas, in 2023.
Records also indicate that the town bought land near Cary Elementary School, totaling more than $1 million, against the recommendation of the assistant town manager, and that not every town council member knew of this transaction.
