A Durham teen has been arrested in connection with a carjacking and armed robbery in Chapel Hill.

According to the Chapel Hill Police Department, 16-year-old Shaun Dunn was taken into custody Thursday night, with the help of U.S. Marshals.

In connection with the July 19 carjacking, Dunn is charged with:

  • Robbery with a dangerous weapon
    • Two counts of stolen goods and property
      • Felony larceny
        • Felony conspiracy
          • Second-degree kidnapping

            Police also charged him with felony conspiracy and possession of a stolen motor vehicle in connection to the armed robbery on July 17.

            “We will not tolerate this violent behavior in Chapel Hill,” said Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “While this is a significant turn in our investigation of these crimes, we are not finished. Our work to identify other suspects continues right now.”

            Dunn is being held at the C.A. Dillon Youth Development Center in Butner.

            He faced an Orange County judge Friday afternoon and was given a $250,000 bond.

            Chapel Hill police said three men stole a car from two people at gunpoint on E. Franklin Street near the North Estes Drive intersection around 2:25 a.m. Saturday, July 19. There were no reports of injuries.

            About two hours later, the stolen car was located and recovered in Durham.

            During Dunn's first appearance, the Assistant District attorney told the judge law enforcement found a backpack with the victim's stolen items containing a magazine and Dunn's ID.

            Chapel Hill police linked that incident to an armed robbery that occurred on Thursday, July 17.

            At around 10:30 p.m. that night, police said a woman was grabbing cash from an ATM at the Bank of America on Willow Drive. About 10 minutes later, she arrived home where three men confronted her and robbed her at gunpoint, stealing cash and credit cards before fleeing. She was not injured. 

            Investigators are still looking for two other people. Police have released photos of one man they believe to be involved in the incidents.

            Dunn was assigned a public defender. His next court date will be Aug. 11.
