A Clayton mother is dead, and her 18-year-old son had to jump out of a second-story window after being shot, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office says. 

The shooting happened in the early hours of Saturday morning on Valley Field Drive.

Someone called 911 from the home but quickly hung u. When deputies arrived to follow up, the sheriff’s office says, they heard gunshots and saw 18-year-old Zykeith Shaw jump from a second-story window. 

Deputies pulled Shaw to safety while someone barricaded themself inside. 

Once deputies were able to get into the home, they found 41-year-old Princess Russell dead, and a 10-year-old girl alive and uninjured. Russell was Shaw’s mother. 

Deputies arrested 41-year-old Jerry Williams, Russell’s boyfriend, and charged him with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. 

“Obviously, it surprised me,” said neighbor Anderson Granados Lara. “I thought everybody here was peaceful.”

Granados Lara said police lights woke him up early Saturday. He looked outside to see police draw their weapons and point them towards a neighboring house. 

“I overheard a knock on the door, and I heard them yell, ‘Come out with your hands up,’” Granados Lara said. 

Williams is now being held in jail without bond. His last felony conviction was in 2003, for attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.
