Fort Bragg paratroopers among three people killed in head-on crash on NC 87 in Harnett County

Two paratroopers based at Fort Bragg were among the three men killed Saturday morning on N.C. Highway 87 near Olivia Road in Harnett County.

According to the State Highway Patrol, a Toyota Camry with three people inside was traveling south on N.C. 87, and a Chevrolet Z-71 was traveling north on the same highway. 

Troopers said the Camry crossed the center line and crashed head-on with the Chevrolet. 

The drivers in both cars were killed in the crash, along with a backseat passenger in the Camry. The front seat passenger in the Camry was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. 

The driver of the Chevrolet has been identified as 28-year-old William T. Underwood of Sanford. 

The 82nd Airborne Division confirmed Spc. Romeo Mason Fleck, 22, from Pennsylvania, and Spc. Charles Arthur Jackson, 21, from Efland, N.C., were in the Camry and were killed in the crash. Fleck, an infantryman, and Jackson, a combat medic, were both assigned to the division since 2024.

A third soldier in the Camry is in stable condition, officials confirmed.

SHP said this crash remains ongoing at this time.
