The SHP said the CSX train was traveling southbound and had already made it about halfway across the intersection when the train hit a Honda sedan. Troopers said the crossing warning arms were down and operating properly.

According to the SHP, the driver of the Honda, who was traveling at 25 mph, didn't stop and crashed into the crossing arm and then the train.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Bryant Hardy, from Durham, died at the scene.

SHP said the train did not stop until a few miles later because the CSX train engineer told officials they didn't realize they had hit a car.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, Wilson Co EMS, the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and CSX.

The investigation is ongoing.
