Police: Juvenile in custody, shots fired during scuffle with officers on GoDurham bus

A young person was taken into custody on Monday after police said he fired shots during a scuffle with police officers on a GoDurham.

According to the Durham Police Chief Stephanie Mardis, officers responded to a GoDurham bus around 4:25 p.m. in the 4000 block of Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard for reports of an attempted larceny.

"The suspect was identified, and they [an officer] went to take the individual into custody," Mardis said.

Officers located the suspect, who they described as a juvenile male, and a scuffle began.

During the scuffle, police said the suspect pulled out a gun and fired two shots. No one was hit by gunfire, and the officers got the gun away from the suspect and took the suspect into custody.

Around 5:30 p.m., several Durham police vehicles were seen parked near a GoDurham bus close to the Shannon Road intersection.

Chief Mardis says the police officer suffered a minor injury to his hand and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Durham police officers are still at the scene for further investigation, adding that they would provide additional details as they become available.
