People may have been exposed to measles at golf courses in Cumberland and Moore counties, according to public health officials.

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is warning the public of a potential measles exposure on Friday, March 13, 2026. The exposure is linked to someone who tested positive for measles, but is not a Cumberland County resident.

Individuals may have been exposed at the following location on Friday, March 13, 2026, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.:

  • Gates Four Golf and Country Club: 6775 Irongate Drive, Fayetteville

    Individuals who visited this location during this time should monitor for symptoms through Friday, April 10, 2026.

    In Moore County, a person infected with measles visited the Legacy Golf Course Pro Shop (12615 U.S. Highway 15-501) on March 11, 2026, between 7 a.m. and noon. Individuals who were present at this location during that time may have been exposed to the virus.

    North Carolina has seen at least 24 measles cases since December 2025. There are currently no confirmed cases of measles in Cumberland County.

    The health department said contract tracing is underway in an effort to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed. Text notifications will come from 984-400-0729.

    Individuals who visited the location listed above during the identified exposure timeframe should contact the Cumberland County Department of Public Health at 910-433-3813.

    Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can remain in the air for hours after an infected person leaves a room. 

    Doctors urge two doses of the MMR vaccine to achieve 97% lifetime protection against measles infection. 

    Symptoms typically begin between 7-14 days after exposure, but may appear up to 21 days later, and may include:

    • High fever (may exceed 104°F)
      • Cough
        • Runny nose
          • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
            • Tiny white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
              • A red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads to the body

                Laboratory testing is typically not recommended unless symptoms appear.
