A Garner teenager's death that came under mysterious circumstances is resurfacing this week as authorities keep hope alive that new information will come to light. 

Josh Davis was killed on Jan. 6, 2004, while walking down Hall Boulevard in Garner. Twenty-two years later, police and investigators are still perplexed about his death. Davis was 16 at the time.

The department issued a bulletin requesting the public to provide any helpful details, regardless of how minute they seem, on Tuesday to help with their investigation. 

"The anniversary is often a good time to put stuff like that out," said Garner Det. Michael Hammerstein.

Garner police said there are no new developments in Davis's case, but Tuesday marks 22 years since he was found dead along a neighborhood street. Davis would have been 38 years old this year.

“We just want to make sure there’s nothing that’s been overlooked,” Hammerstein said. “Anything that seems insignificant or unimportant, we want to hear about it.”

Garner police said he and a friend had just left his mother’s house and were walking along Hall Boulevard at about 7 p.m. to get to his father’s home in the same neighborhood.

A friend of Davis said he ran back to his mother's house to get a CD and a shirt. When he returned, Davis was lying on the side of the road, dead from a blow to the head.

In 2007, investigators concluded that Davis was hit by a car. 22 years later, officials still consider the case a homicide and are continuing to investigate all possible angles.

Garner is a different place than it was in 2004, but in some ways still the same. The population is significantly higher as the proximity to Raleigh attracts more families, but detectives hope some of the long-term residents have memories of the neighborhood, that day, or those who passed through that could prove helpful.

"Anyone who’s ever worked here has been interested in the case,” said Hammerstein, who grew up in the town. “Garner was a small town then and still is.”
