A Halifax County man was arraigned Wednesday on a criminal charge of cruelty to animals.

On Feb. 26, PETA workers found a sick, severely emaciated, chronically starved pit bull named Cash chained in Marcus Boswer’s yard.

Bowser is due in court on May 12.

PETA workers found the pit bull with his spine, ribs and hipbones jutting out. A release from PETA said the pit bull was kept tethered outside, which is illegal in Halifax County.

According to PETA, the dog should weigh between 50-60 pounds. The dog weighed 29 pounds.

The dog was undergoing treatment at a PETA animal shelter but had to be euthanized after a veterinarian recommendation.
