A crash claimed two lives and shut down part of Interstate 85 in Durham County on Friday afternoon.

The wreck occurred in the northbound lanes and near the exit for Redwood Road.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a black Honda Civic rear-ended a gray Chevrolet, seding the Chevy off the road and into a tree.

Both people in the Honda -- Denise Crawford, 61, and Kelis Gorham, 21, both of Maryland -- died.

The drive of the Chevy, Bonita Green, 60, of Oxford, was not injured. 

It was not clear what sent the Honda into the Chevy to trigger the crash.
