Apex High School could not open parts of its parking lot Friday for students because much of it was still covered with ice and snow.
That forced dozens of students to park illegally in a nearby neighborhood causing major headaches for those who live there. Apex police said they will let the parking violations slide by as long as cars aren't blocking driveways or fire hydrants.

“I figured something was up at the school," said longtime resident Elena Tercheria.
All of the cars parked along the street in the Brookfield neighborhood belong to Apex High School students. Sky 5 flew over the parking lot where they would normally park where you could see a large portion of it is closed off because it’s still covered in ice.
Some students parked in the teacher lot but once that was full, they decided to park on the neighborhood streets. Some of them parked right in front of signs that say no parking between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on school days.
“It can get kind of hard to leave the neighborhood," said Tercheria.
Police said they aren't handing out tickets but that's just a one-time thing. Residents here aren't happy about it, but some are understanding.
“It kind of makes it hard to maneuver to back out of your driveway," said Tercheria.
The school told its students to allow for extra time when arriving Friday. Part of an email from the principal told families “even after plowing the top deck and driveway down to the lower deck, much of it is still sheets of ice!”
Those who live in this neighborhood just hope it melts by Monday so things can get back to normal.
