2 juveniles detained after allegedly throwing rocks at cars from Wake Forest overpass

Drivers in Wake Forest are concerned after reports of rocks thrown at cars near downtown.

Two juveniles were detained after two cars were hit by rocks thrown from an overpass Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson with the town of Wake Forest.

The town said a police officer would attempt to obtain juvenile petitions against the two involved. 

A police report shows potential charges of damage to personal property and resisting an officer.

One of the vehicles hit was a 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander SUV, according to the police report.

A WRAL News viewer, who wants to remain anonymous, said her car was one of those hit.

She said it happened around 2:50 a.m. Sunday while she was driving home after her shift as an Uber driver.

“As I was driving underneath the railroad overpass on the edge of downtown by Roosevelt Avenue. I had just emerged from underneath it when I heard the crash." 

She said multiple rocks hit her windshield.

“What I could see from my windshield, I think three rocks, three separate rocks, made impact with my windshield,” she said. “There were three holes, literal holes in my windshield.”

The woman told WRAL News she had just gotten her car a month ago. 

She immediately pulled over to call 9-1-1 and report the incident to Wake Forest Police.

“They [Wake Forest Police] came at different angles around the bridge,” she explained. “Then, they just went toward that location of the overpass and eventually caught the two.”

 Pictures shared with WRAL News show the extent of the damage to the car’s windshield, along with the amount of rocks thrown in the middle of the street. 

Fortunately, she only received a small cut on her forearm, but the extent of damage to her car could be thousands of dollars.

As for calling 9-1-1 right away, the viewer said she is glad she did.

“Wake Forest PD responded, they did their job and they did it well,” the woman said. “They responded very quickly, they were extremely professional, and they caught [them].” 

The lesson she wants to give others is to think before you do something dangerous.

“As children get older, you teach them about consequences,” she said. “You don’t get to throw objects at cars as they’re moving, you don’t get to put other’s lives at risk.”
