A man is in the hospital on Wednesday after police say he was assaulted in Durham.

According to the Durham Police Department, officers were called to a reported assault around 11:39 a.m. in the 100 block of William Penn Plaza. When police arrived, officers said they learned the assault stemmed from an argument over a handicap parking spot.

During the argument, police said a man assaulted the victim, who police described as an "elderly" man. The victim then hit his head on the ground during the assault.

As of Thursday, the victim was in the hospital with critical injuries, Durham police said.

Police charged Darrell Bright, 44, of Durham, with assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

They said their investigation is ongoing.
