Raleigh police are investigating a fatal vehicle accident involving a missing Cary man.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, police responded to crash. According to police, the vehicle went down an embankment and overturned at the off-ramp from I-40 westbound to Wade Avenue.

Officers located the driver, Linwood Phillips, 48, of Cary, inside the vehicle and said he was dead at the scene.

According to family and friends, Phillips, a rideshare driver, had been missing since Thursday from Cary.

Phillips was still in his seat belt inside the vehicle, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, Phillips’ car was traveling a minimum of 70 mph when it left the roadway and went airborne before landing upside down, police said.

Due to the extent of the damage, it is believed Phillips died on impact.

The crash is still under investigation by Raleigh police.

Cary police are investigating the missing person case.
