Glenwood South could one day bring another high-rise to Raleigh’s entertainment district, and they could set up shop at locations popular with Carolina Hurricanes fans.
According to attorneys representing former Cane Bates Battaglia and his brother, Anthony, the two are seeking to file rezoning requests for their bars, Teets and Lucky B’s, to make way for a 40-story mixed-use building along 425 Glenwood Avenue and 609 Tucker Street.

The two bars, both staples for Canes fans and players, are currently zoned for seven stories. In a statement from their representatives, the Battaglia brothers say they envision a vertical mix of residential and office use above a new and improved Teets.
“This rezoning proposal seeks to turn the comprehensive plan’s vision into a reality by contributing to Glenwood South’s status as a vibrant destination where Raleigh residents want to live, work, and play,” Battaglia’s lawyers said in a statement to WRAL News. “Entitling the site for 40-story, mixed-use development is the first step in this long and exciting journey.”
As of Thursday evening, the rezoning request has not been filed. Gavin Manson, a frequent visitor to Glenwood South, told WRAL News that he felt like it was inevitable.
The law group representing the bar owners, Morningstar Law Group, hosted a community meeting to seek input and sent a letter to the community to notify them of the planned rezoning request. Daniela Lopez, who works near the bars, said that even though she loves Lucky B’s and it’s a part of downtown, she felt like it was “kind of pointless.”
“[I] feel like we have bigger issues to deal with than building a new skyscraper," Lopez said.
If approved, it would be right across the street from "The Creamery,” a planned 37-story high-rise expected to be Raleigh's tallest, and taller than the PNC building's 32 stories.
WRAL News asked the representative whether Lucky B’s will be relocated or cease to exist if the rezoning is approved. The spokesperson said they had no further comment.
