Tens of thousands of passengers ride GoRaleigh bus services each day, according to data from the transit system, and bus operator Natalie Brown says she never knows who will step on board.
"We never know what could happen to us if we make it home or not," Brown said.

The driver of eight years wants more to be done to protect those behind the wheel.
The latest calls for security come after a fight with four people on Friday, which led to a gunshot being fired on a bus filled with passengers.
"I spoke with the operator," Brown said. "She was shook up, which anyone will be...It's scary knowing that that bullet could have hit anybody."
A press release from the Raleigh Police Department says passengers on the bus were not injured. The department has not announced any arrests.
The gunfire is the third violent incident connected to public transit buses in less than two weeks. On Monday, a man was stabbed on a GoRaleigh bus. The week before that, a bus was hit by gunfire.
GoRaleigh operators are managed through a public transit company called RATP Dev USA.
A company spokesperson did not immediately respond to WRAL's questions about RATP Dev's coordination with Raleigh police and the security training operators receive.
"I think we need more support from RPD. I'm not sure about their resources, but their presence will help a lot more," Brown said. "If we're driving the bus and we have lives in our hand, anything happened to us, not only are we hurt, the ones behind us are hurt as well."
A GoRaleigh spokesperson told WRAL on Friday that the transit system continues "to evaluate our security measures and do all we can to ensure the safety of our passengers and our drivers."
The spokesperson pointed to cameras both inside and outside of buses that have helped apprehend people involved in recent incidents.
