Warrants explain more about the suspect in the killing of a Raleigh school teacher and include a revealing admission.
Warrants show Ryan Camacho, who is charged with the murder of Ravenscroft School teacher Zoe Welsh in January, confessed to a detective during the questioning process.

According to the warrants, a K-9 led police on Jan. 3 to an apartment on Clay Street near Fletcher Park. Officers found another home with evidence of a break-in and discovered Camacho inside. He said he previously lived there and was evicted.
Welsh heard Camacho break into her home and had recognized him from spending time at Fletcher Park. While speaking with a 911 dispatcher, she could be heard screaming at Camacho while she was being attacked.
After investigators took Camacho into custody and while he was being interviewed, the warrant showed Camacho “made an utterance” about Welsh’s death, indicating he knew how Welsh died and asked if this was about the woman he killed.

Camacho was arrested six times in four years, according to public documents. He's been charged with multiple offenses in Wake and Durham counties and escaped from a state prison in 2021 in Salisbury.
Camacho's competence to stand trial for this murder is still to be determined. A forensic evaluator in March said she was unable to determine Camacho's capacity to proceed on other unrelated cases he's charged in.
Camacho has a documented history of mental health issues. He remains behind bars with no bond at this time.
