The Sallie B Howard School community held a vigil honoring the life of Brijette Basden, a kindergarten teacher and former Shaw University track star, who was killed in a crash a week earlier on I-40.
Although the Bermuda native only worked at the school for nine weeks, colleagues say she made a huge impact on students.

"She was a superstar. Just in every way. And a sweetheart in character, integrity. Helpful. That's what she was well known for here in the short time she was here," said Dr. JoAnne Woodard, founder of the Sallie B Howard Schools.
Brijette Basden was killed in a crash on Sunday, Oct. 19, on I-40 near Page Road. Police officers said Basen had pulled over to switch places with her sister. Both were standing outside the car when another car hit them and then veered into another car.
Basden died from her injuries, while her sister is still recovering.
At the vigil, students sang songs, read speeches and held candles honoring their teacher.
The news of Basden's death has been difficult for her young students. When students got back from spring break, Basden's colleagues had to break the news to her class.
"It's ok to cry. Cry if you want to, it's ok," said Angelia Taylor, Basden's co-teacher, on telling students of her loss. "I said we are going to remember her for the good memories, her beautiful smile. Because she was a beautiful teacher."
Colleagues of Basden plan to continue to honor her and share the impact she had on students.
