Barbara Brewington was attacked and killed by a stray dog she had been caring for, according to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies found Brewington dead at her home on North Peavine Road on Sunday evening.

They said she had taken in the dog several months ago. They did not say what kind of dog was involved.
The dog was found, euthanized and will be tested for rabies.
Brewington leaves behind a husband and three children.
Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton described the scene.
"From all indications, she had another pet, a much smaller pet, and she was trying to separate the two that were fighting, and the bigger of the two dogs turned on her and attacked her," he said.
The sheriff issued a warning to the community.
"Every animal has the potential to harm someone. We just think because we start providing care, they will fall into our good graces and will be our protector versus turning on us, but you just don't know."
Josh Gibbs, a family friend, issued this statement:
Barbara was the kindest person I have ever met. She was curious and empathetic. She had a way of being able to feel the emotions of another with out you telling her there's something wrong. She was a loved and dedicated wife and mother. She gave her all to all. She loved with all of her heart. She spent every waking moment thinking of ways to make her children's life's better. Whatever they wanted they got because their happiness was priceless to her. She is loved by all who knew her (and) loved my many who didn't know her. She showed love to every child that she came in contact with. She loved all of her family. Her mother and father meant the world and all that's in it to her. She was a beautiful soul. She was given the spirit of love. She spent her timing sharing that with all she met.
