In a death penalty hearing Tuesday, the man accused of a mass shooting in Southport was found incapable of standing trial at this time.
Nigel Edge is accused of opening fire at patrons at the
American Fish Company in Southport in September
2025. Three people died in the
shooting. and five others were injured.
Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David said that multiple mental health professionals have
evaluated Edge, and all of them said that Edge currently lacks the capacity to
proceed to trial.
Judge Disbrow ordered that Edge be sent to Cherry Hospital with the goal of
having his capacity restored.

David described Edge in a previous court
appearance as a former sergeant with the Marine Corps who had served as a
scout sniper. He said that Edge had a traumatic brain injury and suffers from “significant
mental health issues.”
The timeline for Edge’s case to go to trial will depend on the success of his treatment.
