Stedman police officer dragged by dirt bike after driver flees checkpoint

The driver of a yellow dirt bike dragged a Stedman police officer Wednesday after fleeing a driver’s license checkpoint, according to police.

Stedman Police Chief Tracy Jackson said the department had set up a checkpoint on Carol Street. Around 4:50 p.m., a dirt bike rider approached the checkpoint and then fled from officers.

Police chased the dirt bike before it crashed on Beaverdam Road. When an officer tried to arrest the driver, police said the driver got back on the dirt bike and dragged the officer.

The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

Police said the driver has been identified. It was not immediately clear whether the driver had been arrested.
