Tap-to-pay transactions led Chatham County sheriff’s investigators to charge a New York man with using someone else’s credit or debit card without permission, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said it obtained warrants charging 41-year-old Zhiyuan Zhao of Flushing, New York, with one count of felony financial card fraud, one count of felony identity theft and four counts of misdemeanor financial card fraud.

The sheriff’s office said it received a report about the unauthorized use of a financial transaction card. Investigators found the card was used in tap-to-pay transactions at multiple stores in Wake County.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators used camera footage from the stores and transaction records to identify Zhao as the suspect.
Warrants have been issued for Zhao’s arrest, but he has not yet been served and a court date has not been set.
