Driver identified in Sampson County hit-and-run that killed a teenager, troopers say

A 17-year-old is dead Saturday after a hit-and-run in Sampson County. As of Sunday morning, troopers have identified and arrested the alleged driver.

According to Highway Patrol, a trooper responded to a hit-and-run around 7 p.m on U.S. Highway 421 near Josephus Road in Sampson County. Troopers determined a 17-year-old Savannah Hawkins, ran into the northbound lane of the highway when she was struck by a passenger vehicle.

Family members witnessed the crash and began first aid on Hawkins, but she died at the scene.

Troopers were looking for a burgundy 2010-2012 Ford Fusion that was last seen traveling north on the highway toward Clinton.

As of Sunday morning, troopers located and arrested 50-year-old Antoinette Worrell of Rose Hill. She was charged with felony hit and run, failure to report an accident and driving while license revoked. 

Worrell is held at Sampson County jail under no bond.
