Tryon Road reopening delayed until next week after sewer main break

The reopening of Tryon Road at Brisk Gallop Way has been delayed until next week, according to the city of Raleigh.

The intersection has been closed due to a sewer main break since Monday, Aug. 18. Raleigh Water officials say the broken pipe was installed in 1998. Sewer gas eroded the top of the pipe made out of ductile iron.

On Aug. 27, the city said the reopening has been delayed until Sept. 5.

"This wasn't the outcome we'd hoped for, and we sincerely appreciate your continued patience as we work to get the road completely open again," the city said in a statement. 

According to the city, the delay is attributed to contractors who are not able to pave the road until next week.

"Their schedules are completely booked," the city said.

Traffic is able to get by slowly, but one lane remains closed on Tryon Road. 

As a detour, drivers can turn left on Avent Ferry Road, right on Lake Dam Road then back on Tryon Road.

The closure is causing delays as more Wake County students and school buses head back to school.

Raleigh Water is working with the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) transportation department to make sure parents are aware of changes, according to the city.
