Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman announced Thursday she won’t seek reelection in 2026.
Freeman’s term ends in December 2026.

“This has been one of the most challenging personal decisions I have ever made,” Freeman said in a news release. “By the end of this term, I will have had the amazing opportunity to serve the people of this state for over three decades — with the last 20 years as an elected leader in our local courts."
“It has been a tremendous honor to represent the citizens of Wake County, but I believe it is time to find new ways to serve the community and to give others the opportunity to bring new energy and vision to the critical role of district attorney.”
Freeman has served as the Wake County district attorney since 2014.
“Over the next 18 months, I will continue working hard to keep our county safe, to honor the public’s trust, and to express my gratitude to the many people who have stood beside me in this work,” she said.
Freeman served as:
- The assistant attorney general from 2002-2006 at the North Carolina Department of Justice
- The clerk of the Superior Court in Wake County from December 2006 to November 2014
