The Wake school board approved Tuesday the next phase of its security upgrades, which include better securing classroom doors and adding security cameras at some schools.
The district is asking the school board to approve a $4.7 million contract with Raleigh-based Swinerton Builders for "replacing classroom exit door hardware," additional security cameras and card readers.

District officials did not respond to WRAL News questions this week about planned changes to the doors. It is unclear how many schools actually need door upgrades, and the contract doesn't specify which schools will receive them.
The school board already approved a $5.4 million contract with Raleigh-based Harrod and Assoc. Constructors for the same work at some other schools earlier this summer.
The school board set aside some extra funding for security earlier this year.
The two new contracts are part of a series of planned physical security upgrades. These contracts are phases "1A" and "1B." The district hasn't revealed what the next phases are and often keeps certain projects and proposals under wraps to avoid exposing any security vulnerabilities.
Last school year, the Wake County Public School System surveyed its high school students, who said that ensuring exterior and classroom doors are always locked would be one major way they would feel safer at school. They said they generally felt safe.
