NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Firefighters battled soft ground conditions and used specialized equipment to contain a 100-foot-wide blaze, the size of a football field, at the New Hanover County Landfill early Thursday morning.
A spokesperson with New Hanover County Fire Rescue said emergency crews responded to the facility on U.S. Highway 421 at 3:43 a.m. and found the active fire on the eastern side of the landfill. Due to muddy terrain preventing direct truck access, crews used specialized vehicles to apply water around the perimeter and stop the flames from spreading.

Landfill personnel then used heavy machinery to smother the remaining burning trash with soil, and the fire was contained by 6:20 a.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
