Cumberland County confirms positive rabies case; pet owners urged to check vaccinations

Cumberland County Animal Services has confirmed a rabies case after a raccoon tested positive near Barnabus Circle. Residents are urged to ensure their pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations to comply with state laws and avoid fines.

On Wednesday, county officials confirmed a racoon had tested positive for rabies.

The racoon was first found on Thursday, April 17, off Barnabus Circle. The injured racoon was secured and taken to Cumberland County Animal Services that same day.

All pet owners are urged to check the rabies vaccination status of their pets. Pets not vaccinated or due for a booster should be taken to the vet immediately.

Cumberland County officials remind pet owners state law requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies, and can be fined for each unvaccinated dog or cat.

Pet owners can bring their pets to Cumberland County Animal Services on Wednesdays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to get their one year rabies vaccination for $5. Animal Services is located at 4704 Corporation Dr. in Fayetteville.
