GREENSBORO, N.C. (WXII) - A U.S. Postal Service employee was arrested Wednesday at his home in Greensboro after police said he allegedly stole thousands of prescription opioid pills intended for veterans.

According to the Greensboro Police Department, 22-year-old Martez Murphy was arrested and indicted on one count of theft of mail matter by employee, a federal charge. Officers said that, with the help of U.S. Postal Service personnel, a search warrant was executed at his home in Greensboro.

Officers said they believe Murphy stole as many as 50 Veterans Affairs prescriptions, totaling more than 7,500 pills.

A federal investigation is ongoing.
