The town of Hillsborough is known for its laid-back charm, delicious comfort food and vibrant community events. Shops, restaurants and pubs line its historic streets, creating a thriving social scene. Just steps beyond its artsy downtown flows a serene North Carolina landmark — the Eno River — now more accessible than ever.

Unveiled in 2014, the Hillsborough Riverwalk connects the Hillsborough's downtown area to the ‘up and coming’ West Hillsborough commercial district. It extends from Occoneechee Speedway in the East to Occoneechee Mountain Natural Area in the West, all along the scenic Eno River. Stretching three miles along a winding riverbank, the trail has become a favorite of families, cyclists and tourists. Its paved path features a playground, dog park, hiking and biking trails and a pollinator garden — all accessible via ADA-compliant walkways.

Along the route, businesses have emerged to greet visitors. From breweries to shops, local owners have cultivated a riverside community.

“Our quiet corner of the Riverwalk is such a hidden gem,” says Stephanie Crowe, co-owner of Eno River Brewing. “Our brewery is nestled between Hillsborough’s popular Gold Park and Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, where folks can unplug and be present.”

Eno River Brewing is a hub of connection along the trail. With music and warm conversation spilling across its open lawn, families often stop in for a post-hike beverage. The brewery frequently hosts events, bringing a lively atmosphere to the trail. “We are convinced that being in nature fuels the soul,” Crowe said. “Creating our brewery, we wanted to give folks a way to simultaneously connect with nature and one another.”

The Riverwalk has earned a local reputation not just for beautiful scenery, but for a direct connection to downtown. Volume Records and Beer is situated next door to the Riverwalk's main entrance and serves as a laid-back spot to wind down after a day on the trail.

“People often find us accidentally,” said Tony Lopez, owner of Volume Records and Beer. “They hear music streaming from our back patio and wander in. It’s a real community space.” Volume Records prides itself on its friendly atmosphere — a mix between a bar and a coffee shop.

Steps from the Riverwalk, Lopez often sees families and pets finishing their hikes. “There are all sorts of people visiting us from the Riverwalk,” he said. “Everyone is welcome to sit and enjoy a cold drink.” Like much of Hillsborough, Volume Records and Beer is a child-and-pet-friendly establishment, creating a welcoming space for all ages.

After operating locally for eight years, Lopez believes Hillsborough is ideal for an urban greenway. “Hillsborough is an incredibly artsy town,” he said. “People here love nature. The Riverwalk is beautiful, well-kept, and always has kind people — perfect for a town like this.”

For those looking to visit Hillsborough, the town’s Riverwalk is an excellent starting point for a scenic weekend getaway. “We hear many visitors say they come from neighboring counties to spend the day in Hillsborough,” said Stephanie Crowe of Eno River Brewing. “Between the parks, local restaurants and small shops, there is plenty to keep visitors busy for an entire day.”
