Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal is sticking around Raleigh.
Staal, who was MVP of the Carolina Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup championship, signed a one-year contract extension for the 2027-28 season. The deal could be worth up to $10 million.

Staal, the team’s captain, will make a base salary of $900,000 with a $4 million signing bonus and up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses.
Staal, 38, is in the final year of a four-year, $11.6 million deal signed in 2023.
“Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said. “His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.”
Staal had 12 points in 19 playoff games and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He scored in each of the first five games of the Stanley Cup Final, including two goals in the Hurricanes’ pivotal Game 4 win.
Staal scored 20 points and 16 assists in 75 regular-season games with the Hurricanes in 2025-26. Staal was traded to the Hurricanes from Pittsburgh before the 2012-13 season and has been the team’s captain since 2019.
“When you watch him all the time, you kind of get spoiled,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said during the Final. “I coach him all the time, I know I’m spoiled with that player. It’s great that you guys get to see it because that’s what he is, night in, night out for however he’s been around.”
