Auston Matthews scores twice in U.S.'s rout of Germany 5-1

The United States men's hockey team resumed their dominance in group play on Sunday with a 5-1 romping of Germany at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

With time winding down in the first period, the puck made its way to Auston Matthews. Matthews passed it Zach Werenski, who ripped it on the net for the first score of the game with 8.7 seconds left in the period, giving Team USA a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

Team USA keep the scoring going through the second period, with two more goals from Brock Faber and Matthews. Brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk contributed three assists between the two in the period as the U.S. headed into the third period up 3-0.

Team USA kept pouring on the scoring, with Tage Thompson scoring nearly two minutes into the period. Less than five mnues later, Thompson scored his second goal of the game. Tim Stutzle made sure the Germans wouldn't be shut out with a goal with less than 9 minutes remaining in the game.

The United States secured the No. 2 seed in the next round and will face the winner of Sweden vs. Latvia.
