Southern High School football player hospitalized during playoff game

A Southern Durham high school player is in the hospital Friday after he was concussed during a playoff game.

According to a spokesperson from Durham Public Schools, a Southern High School football player suffered a severe concussion during the team's game against Lumberton High School.

It was the first round matchup of the state playoffs for the two teams.

The player was carted off the field after the injury, but gave a thumbs-up to fans as he was leaving the field and was put in an ambulance.

DPS said he was taken to the hospital for observation.
