A mother and her 12-year-old son were killed in a crash in Catawba County in a police chase unrelated to them.

On Friday around 11 p.m., the State Highway Patrol responded to a deadly crash in Hickory on U.S. Highway 70 at 13th Street SW.

According to the SHP, the Hickory Police Department was trying to stop a motorcycle on U.S. 70. During the chase, a Ford Explorer belonging to the Hickory Police Department struck a Honda Odyssey traveling through the intersection.

The driver of the Odyssey, Cynthia Nicole Lail, 38, of Hickory, died at the scene. Her son, Michael Lail, 12, was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Brenner Children’s Hospital by EMS, where he died two days after the crash.

The police officer driving the Ford Explorer, Atia Mohamed Shamseldin, 24, was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. A 21-year-old passenger and police department applicant also had minor injuries.

The road was closed for approximately three hours. The SHP is investigating the crash.
