The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) has reached a settlement agreement with Wake Stone Corporation that will allow the company to mine stone on land near Umstead State Park.
The settlement was regarding Triangle Quarry Mining Permit 92-10.

In February of 2022, The NCDEQ denied the permit to expand.
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority owns the plot of land sandwiched between Interstate 40 and Umstead Park. It was purchased years ago for a runway project that was never built.
After looking over appeal options of the Office of Administrative Hearings decisions on the merits of the permit denial and the award of attorneys’ fees, DEQ moved forward with a settlement to resolve both issues.
The agreement results in the end of the litigation between DEQ and Wake Stone pending in Wake County Superior Court. Wake Stone is required to operate the expanded quarry site under the terms of the permit modification issued on Sept. 8, 2023.
In December of 2022, Wake County leased 151 acres of land from R-DAA for mountain biking.
In 2019, Wake Stone Corporation offered $3.6 million to help fund the lease from the airport authority.
