Buncombe County transitioning to 'targeted searches' of destroyed homes

Buncombe County officials reported Sunday that search and rescue operations are entering a more challenging phase: Targeted searches.

In an update from Black Mountain, they said that 90 percent of primary searches—focused on existing buildings—are complete.

The next step involves targeted searches in areas where homes have been destroyed. This process requires specialized equipment and canines to sift through debris.

During this time, officials are urging visitors to refrain from coming to the area.

"I know a lot of people want to come see our beautiful mountains. But right now, the communities need to focus on their recovery, and we need to ensure resources can reach them," said Ryan Cole, Assistant Director of Buncombe County Emergency Services. "We cannot accomplish this if we're hindered by people coming to see what's happening.

"Please rely on the media for updates and avoid disrupting emergency operations by driving through the affected areas."

Additionally, Buncombe County leaders are advising the public to stay out of rivers until the Environmental Protection Agency confirms they are safe, including refraining from using river water for flushing.
