Increase in car break-ins at Umstead Park, state begins to install security cameras

Two cars were broken into on Tuesday night in a parking lot in William B. Umstead State Park.

Over the past three years, Katie Hall with the North Carolina Division of Parks said there has been an increase in car break-ins during this time of year.

"We have not seen an increase in vehicle break-ins during COVID-19," Hall said.

To respond to the slow increase of break-ins, the department is installing security cameras in the park.

"The best thing people can do to avoid break-ins is to leave valuables at home," Hall said. "If you plan to leave anything valuable in your car, make sure it is locked in your trunk or otherwise entirely out of sight."

Under the state's plan to reopen during the coronavirus pandemic, parks, trails, and public playgrounds can reopen. Umstead Park will close when full and no cars will be allowed to enter until more parking becomes available, the NC parks website says.

If you arrive at the park and are not allowed to enter, return later. The entrance is usually open within the hour. Visitors at the park are encouraged to wear a mask, bring hand sanitizer and go to the bathroom before going to the park.
