Thousands of people, including hundreds of first responders, died in the terrorist attacks – and thousands more were injured when four planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Here is a list of events happening in North Carolina to honor the lives that were lost on this tragic day.
Raleigh
Carry The Load, a national nonprofit, is hosting volunteers at Raleigh National Cemetery on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will clean headstones and beautify hallowed grounds in tribute to our military, veterans, first responders, and their families. The third-annual Carter-Finley 9/11 Stair Climb begins at 7 a.m. at North Carolina State University. Participants will climb the stadium stairs in remembrance of the fallen heroes. Sign a waiver online.
Activate Good’s 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance Event will take place at Marsh Creek Park on Sept. 11. There are two shifts between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Participants will Complete hands-on projects that make a real impact for community partners across the Triangle.Please note that space is limited and registration is required.
On Sept. 13, at 8 a..m., the Tunnel to Towers Foundation will hold a stair climb at 150 Fayetteville St. in downtown Raleigh.
Durham
Keep Durham Beautiful will host a9/11 Day of Service cleanup event in east Durham on Sept. 11 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Volunteers will meet at Proximity Brewing. This event is open to individuals ages 8 and up. Participants under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes or boots, pants and long sleeves, and bring a reusable water bottle. Tools and gloves will be provided.
Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will hold a 9/11 Stair Climb at 6 a.m. at Kenan Stadium. People are asked to register online before the event.
Cary
The Taylor Family YMCA has partnered with the town of Cary's spruce program for a 9/11 Day of Service cleanup event at 101 YMCA Drive in Cary. Get more details and sign a waiver online.
Fort Bragg
Fort Bragg will host a stair challenge on Sept. 11 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Hedrick Stadium in Fayetteville. There is an option to wear a ruck with a weight of 40 pound for men and 20 pounds for women. The event will happen in waves. A bounce house will be available for children during the event.
Clayton
Join the town of Clayton for a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Clayton Fire Station 1 for a remembrance event to honor the heroes and remember the lives lost on 9/11. Local first responders will read firsthand accounts from that day. The event is located at 325 W. Horne Street in Clayton.
Fuquay-Varina
The Fuquay-Varina Police Department will be holding a 9/11 Remembrance Event from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Fuquay-Varina Fire Station #4, located at 4821 Wade Nash Road in Holly Springs.
Hope Mills
The Town of Hope Mills will host a 9/11 Tribute Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the monument garden located at 5788 Rockfish Road in Hope Mills. The event will honor the value of life and pay tribute to service members, first responders and citizens whose lives were lost.
