Lockdown lifted at Smithfield-Selma High School; no weapon found

Two schools in Smithfield were on lockdown on Thursday afternoon as a report of a weapon on Smithfield-Selma High School's campus circulated.

The Town of Smithfield confirms Smithfield-Selma High School was placed on lockdown and Neuse Charter School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Smithfield police said a student told a school resource officer that another student had a gun. Around 2:10 p.m., S-SHS officials and local law enforcement determined the report wasn't credible and found no weapon after searching campus. No one was injured.

S-SHS and Neuse Charter School are across the street from each other.

A large law enforcement presence was seen at S-SHS around 1:30 p.m. Sky 5 captured lots of students leaving campus after the lockdown was lifted.

Smithfield-Selma High School was evacuated on Wednesday when several students were exposed to pepper spray.

3rd lockdown: Hillside High School in Durham responds to gunshot reports

Another lockdown took place Thursday afternoon in Durham at Hillside High School.

Shortly before 3 p.m. the school was placed on a brief lockdown after reports of shots fired.

Durham police said a student reported hearing gunshots outside the school.

Officers responded but did not find any evidence of a shooting or injuries.

The lockdown lasted about 20 minutes and then was lifted.

Police say they will stay on scene until school dismissal.
