After a long shift, Chatham County Sheriff investigator, Jon Murray, was heading home on May 15 when he was stopped at the intersection of NC 22 and NC 42.
Despite the busy highway, traffic was not the cause of his delay. Murray was stopped by a baby hawk sitting in the roadway.
“It wasn’t trying to fly away,” Murray said. “It just sat there while cars went right by it.”
It is likely the bird fell from a nearby nest. Murray assumed the bird was injured or too young to fly. He wrapped it in a blanket and waited for the Animal Resource Center to respond.
Officer Justin Green arrived and took the bird to a local wildlife rehabilitation center, Holly’s Nest Animal Rescue in Sanford where it will remain until it is old enough to fly.
“We’re grateful Jon spotted it when he did,” Green said.
Holly’s Nest Animal Rescue is located in Sanford and specializes in helping injured animals return to the wild.
