Speeding driver hits, injures 2 Edgecombe County deputies

Two deputies were injured Monday after being hit by a driver who was speeding car near Rocky Mount.

The crash happened while the deputies were in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 64 near the city limits of Rocky Mount.

Both deputies sustained minor injuries.

"This is the reason for the move over law and in a work zone," the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook. "When you see emergency lights on the shoulder or in the roadway, slow down and move over."

The driver, Reginald Leon Draughn, was charged with a Move Over Law violation, reckless driving, driving while his license is revoked, failure to reduce speed and not wearing a seatbelt.

ECSO said the collision happened because of an "inattentive, erratic and speeding driver."

The sheriff's office said incidents like this are the reason they will continue Move Over Law enforcement and speed enforcement in construction zones.
